Adaptive Reuse

The YWCA of Brooklyn, located at 30 Third Avenue, Brooklyn, NY was designed by Architects Fredrick Lee Akerman and Alexander B. Trowbridge. The existing 11 story, 250,000 S.F. steel frame masonry and limestone clad building was redesigned by our firm in 2006 to accommodate 84 new affordable housing dwelling units in accordance with the NYC HPD design guidelines as well as new administration offices, community spaces and refurbishment of 214 single room occupancy units. Our design services also included removal of the existing 3/4th Floor swimming pool and 4/5th Floor gymnasium to provide space for the new apartment dwelling units. New mechanical, electrical, plumbing and structural system design was threaded through the different floor plans of the building, all accomplished with residents in occupancy. The design of the new ground floor lobby and public spaces was reinterpreted per the original Architect’s design intent obtained by our historic research of the building. It brings back to the women in residence comforting spaces to congregate and a sense of community in secure surroundings. Our ground floor façade design and new signage herald the renewed life and mission of the YWCA of Brooklyn.
